Moldova is on the western edge of the Eurasian steppe. Its terrain is undulatingly hilly, with narrow tributary valleys of the Prut and Dnestr running mostly north and south. Three highland regions--north, central, and south--rise above the steppe to heights of more than 200 m. The highest point, in the central highlands, is 429 m. Moldova's land is intensively cultivated and grazed, and very little of the original steppe vegetation remains. Less than 5% of the land is covered by mainly deciduous forests.
The climate is mild, with mean January temperatures of -3°C in the south to -5°C in the north, and mean July temperatures of 23°C and 19° C, respectively. Annual precipitation averages 300 to 500 mm.
Total population is 4,463,847 (World Factbook, July 1996 est.). In addition to Kishinev, the capital, the principal cities are Tiraspol (186,200), Balti (159,000), and Bender (132,700; all 1992).
Stations from the IDMP Network measure both daylight and solar radiation.
