Gibraltar is a British territory located on a 6- sq./km. peninsula that extends 5 km into the Mediterranean Sea from southeastern Spain and dominates the Strait of Gibraltar, which connects the Mediterranean to the Atlantic Ocean. The Rock of Gibraltar, a high ridge of limestone and shale rising 426 m above sea level, is connected to the mainland by a low-lying isthmus, 1.6 km long. The northern and eastern sides of the rock are steep cliffs, but its southern and western sides slope more gradually in a series of terraces.
Summer temperatures average about 22 °, and annual rainfall averages 865 mm.
The city of Gibraltar contains two-thirds of the territory's 28,765 people (1996 est.).
Stations from the IDMP Network measure both daylight and solar radiation.
