Estonia's landscape is of glacial origin, dotted with lakes and rivers. Forests constitute 35% of its territory. Its Baltic coastline is 1,240 km long and contains many inlets. About 10% of Estonia's territory consists of islands in the Baltic Sea. The highest elevation is 317 m.
Total population is 1,429,428 (World Factbook, July 1996 est.). The Gulf of Finland provides a number of ice-free harbors, of which Tallinn (the capital) is the most important. The largest cities, in addition to Tallinn, are Tartu (1996 est. pop., 103,400), Narva (76,400), Kohtla-Jarve (54,600), and Parnu (51,500).
